CHALLENGE
With demand for its digital map coverage rapidly increasing, storage capacity requirements were burgeoning and the company was constantly adding new file servers and storage in its global infrastructure. While this approach addressed the immediate requirements, it did so at the expense of rapidly escalating maintenance costs, increased load on staff resources, and severe space shortages in its datacenters.
The firm chose to implement VMware's virtualization solution to consolidate servers across the enterprise as a way to ease the management burden and improve utilization while reducing cooling and other operational expenditures. In addition, the company required that its three datacenters be exact replicas so each facility could assume operations of the other's in the event of unexpected downtime.

Since implementing VMware, the company has decreased its server footprint significantly, while decreasing the time to provision a new server from ½ a day to 30 minutes.
